Asking when we'll achieve Artificial General Intelligence is the wrong question. We've already crossed a more important threshold, and we aren't ready for what has already happened.
I don't disagree with you! I think we can get caught up in what we mean by "intelligence," and that's a worthwhile debate. Perhaps I could have substituted "performance" and that would have less controversial. But my broader point is that the current AI is already able to out-perform most of us, and that waiting for it to beat "Humanity's Last exam" to crown it AGI is somewhat foolish given the stakes. How do you think we should prepare, Matjaz? And thanks for the comment and starting an important dialogue on this topic!
I don’t really know. But I know we are seeing a rising number of young people “falling in love with” AI girlfriends and boyfriends, so maybe we should talk more about what AI actually is and isn’t.
I listened to a chilling podcast about that very scenario and it’s clear to me that AI can simulate intimacy and make people feel heard and even validated. It shows, among other things, that complex ideas like “intelligence” and “love” can be mimicked to a greater or lesser degree.
AI doesn’t “know” anything, cannot really think, and is not intelligent.
But if the point is that it can emulate some of these things and that the emulations are even more “effective” in some ways, that’s probably true.
